And we all enjoyed a day on a small island.

There are a couple of tours that are scheduled on the island. A History tour and “Sea Glass“ tour. Mother and son went on the History tour, while the rest of us went on the “Sea Glass” tour.

The island was used for a while as a dumping place. Some of the trash consisted of glass and ceramic things. With the tide the glass would be washed up on the beach then back out again into the ocean. Over time the glass would change in some ways, yet continued its ride with the tides in and out. They call this glass “Sea Glass”. Many different colors of glass can be found on the beach- brown, blue, green and sometimes red. We found a red piece. Each piece’s age-year in time can be determined by the colors.

We found some pieces that looked like they were from old china plates.

The rule of the island is no one can take any glass home as a souvenir. Yet they encourage visitors to search and find the sea glass and make a design with it if they please. “J” made a sailboat sailing on the water with brown, blue and white glass. “A” went for the more nature collection of snail shells, mussel shells and part of a crab shell.

They enjoyed it.

The later part of the afternoon was spent enjoying a small section of beach. Oh, and a short walk with “A” to get a glimpse of Boston lighthouse – though far out and smallish looking.

It was neat to go to the island.

There is grass and small trees on the island, Because of it being a dumping place the Parks Dept. had to choose only certain plants to plant there. No deep rooted trees due to the possible creation of holes in the soil, which any smell underneath could be released.

Looking out back toward Boston I realized that this and George’s island (another island) were probably the islands I used to wonder about. I worked in a state office at 100 Cambridge St. in the late 1980’s. From the cafeteria’s windows on the 14th floor I could see out to the harbor. Way out one could make out some island forms. On clear days you could sometimes see a large barge way out there near the islands. I didn’t know anything about the island’s back then. I just noticed them out there.

Cool to visit and learn about them.

Oh, the things to learn and see when exploring.

Feature Art/Product:

“Boston Lighthouse“, Pastel

I did this Pastel of Boston Lighthouse from a picture I took when I was on a Whale Watch cruise years ago.

Originals and Prints of my work are available for sale at my website.
Check out Great Gift items at Lisa’s Art & Horses

Gift Certificates available.

Art News

“Le Cadeau du Cheval”
Several artists in the Equine Art Guild were a part of this unique tribute to the horse.
