\u201cChoosing Mediums<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I recently got a question from a young girl about being an artist and creating.\u00a0 Her question was, \u201cWhat mediums have I used and liked?\u201d<\/p>\n

I would like to explain at the start that it was over many years that I practiced and perfected my skills.<\/p>\n

I started rather young and really liked it, so I spent a lot time learning and practicing drawing and \u00a0painting.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve worked with some mediums regularly over the years while other mediums I\u2019ve worked with for a short time then put them aside.<\/p>\n

So what mediums have I liked and used?<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve dappled in a number of different mediums.<\/p>\n

Oils, acrylics<\/strong><\/p>\n

For a short time when I was young\u00a0 I took oil painting lessons with a local artist. \u00a0I liked the freedom of brush and paint on a canvas.<\/p>\n

Though I liked oil painting, I decided after a while to put it aside and move on.<\/p>\n

I’ve also done some work in acrylics and liked it, but didn\u2019t really stay with it.<\/p>\n

Charcoal, Pastels<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always enjoyed and still do charcoal drawings.<\/p>\n

I like the feel of charcoal and the soft lines it can create.<\/p>\n

About 15 years ago, I got into pastels. I like the feel of the chalk like sticks of Nupastels.\u00a0 I\u2019ve done a number of portraits over the years using this medium.<\/p>\n

C<\/strong>o<\/strong>lor Pencil<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve done some work with colored pencils too. Yet my working with them has been on and off.<\/p>\n

Some pencils require working up layers\u00a0 to build up an image.<\/p>\n

Recently I\u2019ve found I rather like watercolor pencils.<\/p>\n

They can be used as regular pencils with the added benefit of being able to add water to them for a watercolor wash effect if desired.<\/p>\n

I did a couple of \u2018soldier portraits\u2019 and some more recent illustrations using them.<\/p>\n

Pen and Ink<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is another medium I\u2019ve always loved and have used regularly over the years. \u00a0I enjoy creating with various lines to form an image.<\/p>\n

Mixed media<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve found using a mix of mediums fun at times too.<\/p>\n

Pen and Ink and digital (computer graphic program)<\/p>\n

Pen and Ink and watercolor pencil<\/p>\n

Pen and Ink and Marker.<\/p>\n

Scratch <\/strong>b<\/strong>oar<\/strong>d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been intrigued by this medium.<\/p>\n

I remember in school doing scratch art.\u00a0 This is a paper painted with lots of colors, which then had a black coating of India ink applied all over it.\u00a0 With a sharp tool, one could scratch out images and lines and see the colors underneath revealed.<\/p>\n

Recently I picked up this medium again.<\/p>\n

Scratch board comes in white sheets that ink can be applied to or \u2018already prepared\u2019 boards that are ready to scratch.<\/p>\n

I really love this medium.<\/p>\n

I like the contrast from dark to light that can be created.<\/p>\n

I recently had an exhibit of my scratch board art in a gallery.\u00a0 People seemed to liked it a lot.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve chosen a few mediums to stay with that I work best in.<\/p>\n

As far as image, I tend to decide what medium to use by what subject matter or feeling I\u2019m aiming to create.<\/p>\n

Creating art has been something I do and plan to continue doing for many years.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m learning and growing through creating.\u00a0 Each medium has its use in creating the images.<\/p>\n
