{"id":819,"date":"2012-05-10T20:20:19","date_gmt":"2012-05-10T20:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisasart.com\/blog\/?p=819"},"modified":"2013-08-07T16:34:26","modified_gmt":"2013-08-07T16:34:26","slug":"opportunity-knocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lisasart.com\/blog\/opportunity-knocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Opportunity Knocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy May<br \/>\nAnd<br \/>\nHappy Mother&#8217;s Day to all<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpportunity Knocks\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a freelance graphic artist.\u00a0 Finding work as a freelance artist can feel like \u201cFeast or Famine\u201d at times.\u00a0 Sometimes you have projects and work to fulfill, while other times there\u2019s a lull in projects and work showing up.\u00a0 It can be tough to navigate sometimes, yet one must keep a focus.<\/p>\n<p>One must work at honing one\u2019s skills and talents.\u00a0 Yet that\u2019s not all.<br \/>\nOne must \u201cget out there\u201d and meet people, make contacts \u2026 yes network, network, network.\u00a0 Out of the people you meet,\u00a0 a client could come through,\u00a0 or projects to find out about and look into, and\/or events that could be a valuable place to meet people and make contacts.<\/p>\n<p>Opportunity isn\u2019t going to just show up at your door. One doesn\u2019t get discovered just working in a studio.\u00a0 Connection is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Locally and online there are many ways to connect with people.<br \/>\nLocally there are networking groups and events.\u00a0 I\u2019ve participated in some network groups and some art events.<\/p>\n<p>Another great way to meet people is being active in your local community.\u00a0 I\u2019m the VP of the PTO at my kids school.\u00a0 I\u2019ve met parents, teachers, and have gotten to know others in the community too by being involved.<\/p>\n<p>Having an online presence is very good too.\u00a0 One can direct those you meet to your web site\/blog, or profile.\u00a0 One can meet people through LinkedIn, FB, and Twitter.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve had people find me through searches too.\u00a0 One person recently contacted me through email because He saw my web site. He emailed me with his interest and a phone number.<br \/>\nI called and we talked on the phone.\u00a0 His project was a mural in his place of business.\u00a0 He was local so we also met to discuss the project too. Click on the image above to read all about it and the artists who participated in it&#8217;s creation, as well as see where it will be coming to a location near you in the coming year!<br \/>\n<strong>Soldier Portraits<\/strong><br \/>\nDarla Dixon organized a group of artists who will create no-charge compassionate portraits for the families who have lost a loved one in Operation Iraqi Freedom\/Operation Enduring Freedom.
