Choosing Mediums

I recently got a question from a young girl about being an artist and creating.  Her question was, “What mediums have I used and liked?”

I would like to explain at the start that it was over many years that I practiced and perfected my skills.

I started rather young and really liked it, so I spent a lot time learning and practicing drawing and  painting.

I’ve worked with some mediums regularly over the years while other mediums I’ve worked with for a short time then put them aside.

So what mediums have I liked and used?

I’ve dappled in a number of different mediums.

Oils, acrylics

For a short time when I was young  I took oil painting lessons with a local artist.  I liked the freedom of brush and paint on a canvas.

Though I liked oil painting, I decided after a while to put it aside and move on.

I’ve also done some work in acrylics and liked it, but didn’t really stay with it.

Charcoal, Pastels

I’ve always enjoyed and still do charcoal drawings.

I like the feel of charcoal and the soft lines it can create.

About 15 years ago, I got into pastels. I like the feel of the chalk like sticks of Nupastels.  I’ve done a number of portraits over the years using this medium.

Color Pencil

I’ve done some work with colored pencils too. Yet my working with them has been on and off.

Some pencils require working up layers  to build up an image.

Recently I’ve found I rather like watercolor pencils.

They can be used as regular pencils with the added benefit of being able to add water to them for a watercolor wash effect if desired.

I did a couple of ‘soldier portraits’ and some more recent illustrations using them.

Pen and Ink

This is another medium I’ve always loved and have used regularly over the years.  I enjoy creating with various lines to form an image.

Mixed media

I’ve found using a mix of mediums fun at times too.

Scratch board

I’ve always been intrigued by this medium.

I remember in school doing scratch art.  This is a paper painted with lots of colors, which then had a black coating of India ink applied all over it.  With a sharp tool, one could scratch out images and lines and see the colors underneath revealed.

Recently I picked up this medium again.

Scratch board comes in white sheets that ink can be applied to or ‘already prepared’ boards that are ready to scratch.

I really love this medium.

I like the contrast from dark to light that can be created.

I recently had an exhibit of my scratch board art in a gallery.  People seemed to liked it a lot.

I’ve chosen a few mediums to stay with that I work best in.

As far as image, I tend to decide what medium to use by what subject matter or feeling I’m aiming to create.

Creating art has been something I do and plan to continue doing for many years.

I’m learning and growing through creating.  Each medium has its use in creating the images.
