“Art and the Viewer”

I recently participated in Xos: Open Studios: Pawtucket.
I set up my display of art work and gift items in a downtown old mill.
It’s always sort of interesting for me to watch people come by my booth and look at the art work.

Great art gives the viewer something to look at and ponder.

In creating the art there are details as composition, color, light and dark values, techniques, etc.

The viewer gets to see the work as completed.
The viewer see what he/she sees in the work. There may be feelings or thoughts that come up in the moment of looking at a work.
I notice that people look and then go for a closer look, seem to ponder, and then smile and “Thank” me.
Sometimes there is a conversation. While other times it’s just a brief connection.
Either way it’s good.
Art is for viewing and seeing. The Viewer is as essential a part of the experience as the artist who created it.

Just some thoughts.

Thank you

Darla Dixon organized a group of artists who will create no-charge compassionate portraits for the families who have lost a loved one in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom. We are looking for artists to join our efforts, and also for non-artists who will help spread the word about this free service and token of our gratitude to families who have sacrificed so much.”
